‘Hoodlums’ invade residence of Bayelsa monarch, attack him with machete

Chiefson Awululu, paramount ruler of Oluasiri in Nembe local government area of Bayelsa state, is currently receiving treatment in the hospital after sustaining injuries during an attack by suspected hoodlums.

The attackers, who invaded his residence in Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital, in the early hours of Tuesday, inflicted machete cut on Awululu.

They were said to have gained access to his residence after scaling his fence and pulling down the burglary proof at the main entrance of the house.

Leaving him in a pool of blood, the suspects reportedly carted away some valuables.

It took the intervention of neighbours for him to be rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Yenagoa.

The police said armed robbers were behind the incident, adding that investigation had begun.

“On the 19 July, 2016 at about 0315hrs, three men armed with machetes went to the residence of One Chiefson Iyerite Awululu, the paramount ruler of Oluasiri, at Otiotio Road, Yenagoa,” read a statement issued by Asinim Butswat, spokesman of the Bayelsa state police command.

“(They) cut off the burglary proof, stole #9,000 and wounded the King with the machetes.

“The victim was taken to the hospital and he is responding to treatment. Efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects. Investigation is ongoing.”

Awululu is the third Nigerian monarch to be attacked in the last three days.

On Saturday, militants stormed the palace of Goriola Oseni, oniba of Iba in Iba local council development area of Lagos, and abducted him, after killing his guard, and shooting one of his wives.

Next was Lawrence Agaie, a first class traditional ruler in Bokkos local government area of Plateau state, who was shot to death on Monday, while returning from his farm.

His police orderly and two other persons were also murdered in the incident.

The rate of insecurity in the country has assumed a frightening dimension in recent times.
