How best can women connect with ICT? A Lagos-based NGO is providing the answers

Women Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has announced the third edition of its ‘SHE CAN with ICT’ programme, which seeks to connect women entrepreneurs to ICTs in the overall interest of the business world.

According to Modupeoluwa Darabidan, programme manager of W.TEC, women’s use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) will boost their career, network and entrepreneurial skills, which will go on to increase their income.

Darabidan explained that the ‘SHE CAN with ICT’ initiative would also empower the women to contribute positively towards the country’s economic development.

“The overall goal of the ‘SHE CAN with ICT’ project is to expose more women to entrepreneurship and guide them in best practices in integrating technology in their startups and career pursuits,” she said in a statement.

“The project will be catering to 1,000 women undergraduates from University of Lagos (UNILAG), preparing them for the workplace or establishing their own startups while leveraging on free ICT resources and their networks. This opportunity is also being extended to first-year postgraduate female students.”

“The ladies will have the opportunity to interact with notable female Nigerian entrepreneurs, which will further connect them to the reality of the business world and workplace.

“They will also be able to apply all they have learnt in the classroom in preparation for the workplace, using the Internet as a business tool. In the long run, the accrued knowledge will increase their income and go on to help them live more productive lives.

“While the entrepreneurship education imparts entrepreneurial skills and attitudes to these young women as well as favourably disposes them towards establishing own-businesses, the ICT resources will help enhance their business and career opportunities.

“This will empower them to contribute positively towards the nation’s economic development.”
