The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has ramped up awareness and sensitisation for people with disabilities (PWDs).
The agency said the sensitisation became necessary because of the rising cases of human trafficking and the unwholesome practices towards them in Edo state.
This was disclosed at an event which took place as part of activities to mark human trafficking day in Benin, the state capital.
Nduka Nwawenene, a lawyer and NAPTIP commander, Benin zonal office, said now is the time to act.

“There have been silent recruitments and exploitation of PWDs. So, this campaign is to keep PWDs informed of this problem,” he said.
He said the awareness programme was put together to educate them on organ harvesting as well.
Ann Obehi Ojugo, chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), said the sensitisation was done on time because they have found out that PWDs, particularly the deaf and dumb, are being increasingly trafficked.

She further said that majority of its members came together due to inadequate information and awareness.
