Hyundai and Kia are recalling over 208,000 electric vehicles to fix a problem that could cause the loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) spoke on the recalls in a letter dated November 21, addressed to J.S. (Jurassic) Park, vice-president and chief safety officer at Kia America.
The NHTSA said the recall covers more than 145,000 Hyundai and Genesis models, including some IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 electric vehicles (EVs) along with Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 and Genesis G80 models.
In the Kia recall, dated November 18, the agency said about 63,000 EV6 vehicles from 2022 to 2024 are impacted.

“Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2022-2024 EV6 vehicles,” the agency said.
“The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) may become damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery, which can result in a loss of drive power.”
NHTSA said car dealers will inspect and replace the control unit and a fuse if needed, as well as update software.

Owners whose vehicles were recalled earlier this year to fix the same problem will have to visit their dealer again, the agency said.
According to NHTSA, owners will be notified by letter in December and January, respectively, adding that repairs will be performed free of charge.
