‘I did everything to stay’ — tearful Messi bids Barcelona farewell

Lionel Messi was tearful as he bid farewell to fans of FC Barcelona on Sunday following the collapse of new contract talks.

Joan Laporta, Barcelona president, had on Thursday said the decision was reached because of the dire financial situation of the club.

The Argentine star had last month agreed in principle to a five-year deal on reduced wages rather than a two-year extension initially discussed, until a twist emerged.

Speaking during his farewell press conference on Sunday, Messi said he “did everything” he could to stay at the club, but La Liga regulations prevented it from happening.

The press conference was held with current and former teammates and coaches in attendance.

Messi said he was confident of continuing with the Catalan club following the election of Laporta until the surprise U-turn a few days ago.

“Honestly, when the elections happened [in March], I spoke with [club president Joan] Laporta, we had dinner and after that I was convinced I would be staying,” the six times Ballon D’or winner said.

“My contract was never the issue … What I know is that I did everything I could. The club says it could not happen because of La Liga. I can guarantee you that I did everything I could to stay. Last year I didn’t want to, and I said that, but this year it was different.

“I tried to behave with humility and respect, and I hope that is what remains of me when I leave the club.”

Since the news broke, speculations have been rife about the footballer joining Neymar at PSG.

However, Messi refused to drop hints on his next move but assured that the sun hasn’t set on his “competitive” playing days.

“As long as I go on being competitive and as long as my body responds (I’ll carry on playing),” he said.

“As long as I can, I will carry on competing.”

Messi spent 21 years at Barcelona after joining in 2000 at the age of 13. He scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for the Spanish giants.

The Argentina football icon has won the Ballon d’Or six times, the Champions League four times, and La Liga ten times with Barcelona.
