Ibrahimovic header hands Mourinho first Man U trophy

At the first time of asking, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has confirmed his reputation as the man for the big occasion, scoring seven minutes from regulation time to hand Manchester United their first trophy of the Jose Mourinho era.

Leicester City began the Community Shield, which heralds the English Premier League season, hoping to build on their surprise league triumph of last season, but it was Mounrinho’s team who went ahead first.

Jesse Lingard opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, picking up a pass before slaloming past three Leicester City defenders to slot by the side of Kasper Schemeichel in goal.

It wasn’t Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa who equalised for the league champions seven minutes into the second half, but he played a big role in it.

The former CSKA Moscow player picked up the ball from his team’s half and raced forward. Although his pass to Jamie Vardy was misplaced, Marouane Fellaini, who intercepted it, played a short pass to David De Gea, allowing Vardy to steal the ball, dribble De Gea and slot the ball into an empty net.

But Ibrahimovic would render that goal irrelevant, rising highest in the 83rd minute to nod into the net by the near post, thus helping Mourinho to his first trophy for the red half of Manchester after just one competitive match.
