William Glenwright, the general manager of development at the International Cricket Council (ICC), is scheduled to visit Nigeria on Sunday.

Emeka Igwillo, general manager of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), announced this in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the visit was motivated by the achievements recorded by the administration of Uyi Akpata, the incumbent NCF president, and Nigeria’s strategic role in cricket development in the west African subregion.

It is understood that Glenwright would engage in a series of meetings and inspection of cricket infrastructure during his four-day visit.

“We are delighted to host William Glenwright as he will be visiting Lagos and Edo states as well as Abuja. It is primarily a working visit which further cements all our development efforts and we hope to also leverage on the visit to showcase and drive plans deeper with stakeholders,” Igwillo said.

Cricket has been on the upswing in Nigeria, with the country winning two development awards in the last three years.

The cricket federation has also set a 250,000 new player recruitment target across the country and has in a number of states worked with the school system to reach out to more students.

“On the subregion, we are involved in some facility developments in Ghana, where our groundsmen are supporting the Ghana Cricket Federation in the upgrading of their pitches to meet international standards ahead of hosting the Africa Games in 2023 where cricket has been approved as a participating sport,” Igwillo added.

Glenwright’s visit to Nigeria comes ahead of the ICC men’s cricket World Cup Africa division 2 qualifier taking place in Abuja from September 30 to October 9.
