The New York University’s (NYU) school of medicine has become tuition-free for a lifetime after a $200m donation from a couple.

Although the school which opened in 2019 offered tuition-free medical training, the $200m gift from the couple identified as Kenneth and Elaine Langone, ensures that the college’s tuition-free status can continue in perpetuity.

The tuition-free education is focused on primary care, including internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and general surgery.

Kenneth said the donation would ensure that the community receives quality and affordable healthcare.

“By providing our future doctors with an affordable education, we are investing in a brighter and healthier future for all, particularly here on Long Island, where Elaine and I grew up,” Kenneth, chairperson of the NYU Langone board of trustees, said in a statement.

“Providing a world-class, tuition-free medical education here on Long Island ensures many of these future doctors will remain and practice on Long Island.”

Many residents in New York have voiced concerns about healthcare affordability.

A survey of more than 980 adults found that more than half of the respondents experienced healthcare affordability burdens and that 76 percent are worried about affording healthcare in the future.
