The Oyo police command says it has commenced investigation into an alleged food poisoning incident in a church in Ibadan, the state capital.

At least five people reportedly died after partaking in a ‘Love Feast’ — popularly referred to as “Ipese” in a Celestial church located at Apata, Ido LGA.

The incident occurred after the September 22 church service.

About 50 other persons who presented symptoms were said to have been admitted for medical attention at the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo, in Egbeda LGA.

The victims were said to have eaten from the festival food, though it has not been established if there is a connection between the incident and the event.

A church member was quoted as saying, “I ate the same beans that everyone else, including the victims, ate and nothing happened to me”.

When TheCable contacted Adewale Osifeso, spokesperson of the police command in Oyo, he said “investigation is in progress. Updates would be provided accordingly”.
