IGP on Ondo election: We’ll correct all security lapses before poll

Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, has given the assurance that adequate security will be provided for the Ondo state governorship election scheduled for October 10.

Speaking when some civil society organisations (CSOs) paid him a courtesy visit at the police force headquarters on Monday, in Abuja, Adamu assured Nigerians that the forthcoming election would be better than the just-concluded Edo poll.

“We will replicate the professionalism displayed by the police in the just-concluded Edo governorship election, in Ondo state,” Adamu said.

“If at all there were strategic lapses during the Edo governorship elections, we will make sure they are corrected before going into the Ondo state election.”

On the police bill 2020 that was recently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari, he said the action will go a long way in making the force professional in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.

In his remarks, Clement Nwankwo, convener of the organisations, commended the IGP and his personnel for displaying professionalism during the Edo governorship election.

According to him, the recent development in Edo is the only way the nation’s democracy could survive.

“We hope that your men will replicate what happened in Edo, in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo state,” he said.

“We believe the training those deployed to Edo have is the same training those to be deployed to Ondo have. We do know that the police have the culture of managing elections in the country as evident in Edo.”
