Iheanacho’s penalty spares Eagles blushes against Corsica

Gernot Rohr’s men drew 1-1 with Corsica in an international friendly on Friday, to continue the unbeaten run of the German.

The tune up match turned out to be challenging for the Eagles as their relatively known hosts scored first, thus putting the favourites under pressure for most parts.

The Nigerian team had better chances at goal and clearly dominated the first forty-five minute despite going a goal down.

In the 8th minute, Ahmed Musa laid a through pass to Henry Onyekuru, who failed to convert the chance with just Nicolas Penneteau at his mercy.

Jean-Jacques Mandrichi converted from the spot four minutes later, after Tyrone Ebuehi was adjudged to have handled the ball in the 18-yard box.

Yannick Cahuzac almost doubled Corsica’s lead but he was foiled by Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

The Eagles had another chance at goal but Ibrahim Alhassan headed over the bar from close range after a lovely delivery from Elderson Echiejile in the 23rd minute.

The three-time African champions could have levelled up the game before halftime but Musa missed from close range after Alhassan’s effort was spilled by Penneteau.

The second half saw Nigeria create so many scoring chances, struggling to convert.

Rohr made some substitutions with Sikiratu Olatunbosun replacing Ahmed Musa, Stephen Odey for Ibrahim Alhassan and Shehu Abdullahi coming on for Tyrone Ebuehi.

Subsequently, Penneteau made a great save from Kelechi Iheanacho’s shot after a good build up play from Olatunbosun and Oghenekaro Etebo in the 68th minute.

The Manchester City striker would later equalise from the spot for Nigeria in the 80th minute after Etebo was brought down.

Super Eagles’ next game against Togo will hold in Paris on June 1.
