Ikeja Golf Club honours caddies

The management of Ikeja Golf Club, Lagos has accorded recognition to caddies at the club as part of its commitment to highlighting the club’s social project.

The golf club marked its Caddy Day on November 25, hosting a golf event and career talk, among other activities sponsored by ICMA professional services.

Abdulrasheed Adebisi, a representative of the sponsor on the club’s executive committee, said the caddies presented a different job cluster created by golf, which made their role strategic on the course.

“Our goal is to communicate to the caddies career options that are open to them by virtue of being around the sport and other helpful life tips,” Adebisi said.

“Some of the best golfers in the world and even in Nigeria have been drawn from the caddies’ ranks. But today, there are other roles that their knowledge of golf has given them an edge to fill.”

Over 50 caddies, including invited representatives from Ikoyi and Dolphin Golf clubs in Lagos, were among those honoured.

Dolapo Adekanbi shot 74 gross score to lead the chase for the Caddie Player of the Year, while Kazeem Fadesere returned two shots behind to emerge runner-up with Jimoh Eneye securing third position.

Kehinde Haruna, Taiwo Haruna and Sanmi Taiwo also emerged as exceptional among the junior players.

Adebisi said that the top five players would be given a year unrestricted access to the golf club to hone the talent they displayed during the one-day event.

Jolomi Ideh, captain of the Ikeja Golf Club, said the club’s continuous investment in the caddies would reflect on their development in the near future.

“This event is key to us as a club as we are already seeing the impact on the youngsters and it has come to stay on our schedule,” Ideh said.
