‘I’m an armed robber, not kidnapper, says Abuja ‘kidnap kingpin’

Chinaza Philip, a suspected Abuja kidnap kingpin arrested by the police, says he is an armed robber, not a kidnapper.

On January 18, Philip was arrested by the operatives of Kawo divisional police station in Kaduna while conveying a person who was abducted in Abuja to Kano.

Segun Akinyemi, an Abuja resident, who was reportedly abducted by Chinaza and members of this gang at the Area 3 axis of the city was rescued by the police.

On January 19, Philip was handed over to the Abuja police command.

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday during a parade of suspected criminals at the federal capital territory (FCT) police command, the suspect said he specialises in stealing cars from people and goes to sell them in Kano state.

“I want to categorically state that I am not a kidnapper. We only patrol at night and collect cars, and we take them to Kano for sale,” Philip said.

“That night, our aim was to rob the man and take his car, but I was surprised that after we collected his car, Yellow who is like our leader, asked the man to enter the back of the car.

“I did not know why he did that, and I could not argue with him, so we were driving to Kano before the police caught up with us in Kaduna where I was arrested.”
