Impeachment of OAU union leaders declared null and void

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have declared the removal of some executive members of the students’ union as illegal.

The students made this known during a congress which held at the school sports’ complex on Monday.

According to the congressional resolution, Ibukun Oyekan remains the union’s legitimate president, while Adeoluwa Boluwajaiye and Simon Okediji are the only recognised secretary-general and public relations officer respectively.

Speaking during the congress, Edward said some of his opponents were behind the crisis rocking the union.

“This is the time to bring into view students’ oriented projects and as such there are plans to provide fans in all halls of residence, and as well other students’ oriented projects,” he said.

As regards the welfare issue, the president apologised to the students, promising that drastic changes would be made.

After Edward’s speech, Olamilekan Ayodeji of the department of Quantity Surveying, raised an issue on the impeachment and suspension of the union officers by few members of the legislative arm.

He suggested that judicial council be brought into the issue, but it was countered by Victor Oluwafemi, a law student who said taking such to the judicial council was synonymous to accepting the illegal suspension.

After much deliberation on the matter, the congress of students declared as null and void the suspension of the union president, secretary general and public relations officer is null and void

Meanwhile, few hours after the development, the management of the university placed a ban on the activities of the students union indefinitely, citing cases of violence and unruly behaviour.

Dotun Awoyemi, registrar of the school, communicated the development through a statement.
