Imran Khan, former prime minister of Pakistan, is “in stable condition” after he was shot during a protest.
Rauf Hasan, spokesperson of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI) which Khan belongs to, announced the development.
Earlier on Thursday, Khan was shot and wounded in his left leg in a suspected assassination attack while leading a protest march in Islamabad, the country’s capital city, to demand for snap elections.
Speaking on Khan’s current health status, Hasan said the former prime minister is being moved to a hospital in Lahore, Pakistan’s second most populous city.

“There were two attackers at the scene. One was killed and another is in police custody,” Hasan told TIME.
Khan, the 22nd Pakistani prime minister, was ousted from office in April 2022.
His removal came in the wake of a no-confidence vote in the country’s parliament.

Khan had lost his political majority, with the opposition parties moving against him.
The embattled prime minister had alleged that the plot to remove him was backed by the United States, describing it as “interference in domestic politics”.
In recent months, he has been giving speeches calling for snap elections in the country.
