IN DETAIL: How states shared N24.9bn ecological funds in H1 2024

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the 36 states received a total ecological fund of N24.91 billion from the federal account allocation committee (FAAC) in the first half of 2024.

The ecological fund, a vital component of Nigeria’s federal revenue allocation, is earmarked to combat the country’s numerous environmental challenges, such as erosion, desertification, flooding, oil spills, and drought.

Its core purpose is to support all levels of government in addressing ecological issues.

The disbursement of the fund, according to the federal government, is overseen by the ecological fund office, which operates under the office of the secretary to the government of the federation.

In 2023, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) said the nation witnessed extreme weather events such as flooding, windstorms, soil erosion, and dust haze in its state of climate report.

NiMet listed Adamawa, Yobe, Lagos, Plateau, Taraba, Anambra, Delta, Ogun, and Katsina among the states that experienced flooding.

The agency said more than 157,159 persons were affected by flooding last year, with 68,000 displaced.

So far in 2024, several states have been negatively impacted by various ecological challenges, rendering many homeless.

On May 7, a rainstorm struck Miango district in Bassa LGA of Plateau, reportedly injuring three people and damaging over 200 houses.

On July 21, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that flooding in communities within Gada LGA of Sokoto affected 1,664 individuals.

Similarly, the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), on August 28, said floods destroyed at least 200 houses in Sabon-Gari and Zaria LGAs.

KANO GOT N1.04 BILLION — HIGHEST ECOLOGICAL FUND ALLOCATION IN H1 2024

An analysis by TheCable Index shows that in the first half of 2024, Kano state received the highest ecological funds, totalLing N1.04 billion — followed by Lagos with N880.19 million.

Kaduna, Borno, and Katsina received N860.88 million, N816.34 million, and N807.67 million, respectively.

Bauchi, Niger, and Oyo states were allocated N785.93 million, N778.29 million, and N736.94 million, respectively.

Across the geopolitical zones, the north-west got N5.52 billion, followed by the north-east with N4.16 billion.

About N4.12 billion was allocated to the north-central while the south-west, south-south, and south-wast got N4.03 billion, N3.89 billion, and N3.20 billion, respectively.
