Indian PM Modi pledges 20 tonnes of relief materials to Nigeria’s flood victims

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged 20 tonnes of relief materials to victims of recent flooding in Nigeria.

Modi made the pledge on Sunday after he was conferred with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) – the second highest title in Nigeria.

Many Nigerians were displaced by floods this year. In September, many residents in Maiduguri, Borno capital, fled their homes after the Alau Dam collapsed.

The same dam collapsed 30 years ago.

On April 17, the federal government said 148 LGAs in 31 states, including Borno, were at risk of severe flooding between April and November 2024.

The prime minister said his donation is to support the effort of Tinubu’s administration in addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by the floods.

Modi’s visit is the first by an Indian prime minister since Manmohan Singh’s state visit in 2007.

The prime minister seeks to deepen ties between India and Africa’s most populous country.

“Both leaders will exchange signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to enhance collaboration in critical sectors,” a statement from the presidency said on Saturday.
