The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo says 2,629,025 voters registered for the forthcoming governorship poll in the state.
The off-cycle governorship election in Edo will be held on September 21.
Rhoda Gamus, the INEC national commissioner supervising Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states, announced the figures in Benin, the Edo state capital, during the presentation of the voter register for the election to chairmen and secretaries of political parties.
Anugbum Onuoha, INEC resident electoral commissioner (REC) in Edo, who presented the register to representatives of political parties, said the presentation was done in line with the relevant section of the Electoral Act.

Onuoha said the act mandates the commission to present the voter register to political parties 30 days before the election.
He also handed over a copy of the register to Olumide Akpata, candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the election.
Onuoha said Akpata was given the register because of the leadership crisis that has polarised the party in the state.

“The register will be presented to the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Olumide Akpata, as the sole candidate of the party in the election,” he said.
