INEC complies with court order, produces documents requested by PDP

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made available, documents the presidential election petitions tribunal ordered it to produce for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On Wednesday, Chris Uche, PDP counsel, asked the tribunal led by Mohammed Garba to assist in getting the documents from INEC.

He had complained that Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, and the Zamfara resident electoral commissioner (REC) failed to honour subpoena served on them.

Thereafter, the tribunal ordered chairman of the electoral commission and the Zamfara REC to provide the documents sought by the petitioners on Thursday.

Among the documents sought by the petitioners are result sheets. On Thursday, Uche told the panel that he wanted an update on his request.

The counsel to the petitioners made the request at the time the five-man panel of judges were about to go an hour break.

When called upon to speak, Yunus Usman, INEC counsel, said they had produced the documents.

“[The] documents had been substantially produced. It is a very tedious task, but we have to obey the court’s order,” he said.

The tribunal is expected to make a ruling on an application made by the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).
