INEC declares PDP’s Ozuruigbo winner of house of reps election in Imo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Ugonna Ozuruigbo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the winner of the Nkwerre/Nwangele/Isu/Njaba federal constituency seat in Imo.

Rosetta Okechukwu, the INEC collation officer, who announced the results at the collation centre in Nwangele LGA on Friday, said the PDP candidate polled 19,971 votes.

Ikechukwu said Chika Madumere, candidate of the Labour Party (LP), got 9,372 votes, while Harrison Nwadike of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured 8,991 votes.

The electoral umpire had declared the February 25 federal constituency poll inconclusive on the premise that the election did not hold in some parts of Njaba LGA.

But Ozuruigbo asked INEC to declare him the winner because he was leading by a “wide margin”.

Silvia Agu, INEC resident electoral commissioner (REC) in the state, had said the results from Njaba were being reviewed at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja and would be declared as soon as it was done.

Speaking after he was announced as the winner of the election, Ozuruigbo said the “voice of the people has finally spoken”.

He added that he would sponsor bills and motions that would benefit his constituents.
