INEC implements tenure policy as four directors proceed on terminal leave

Four directors of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will proceed on a terminal leave following the federal government’s tenure policy.

The federal government recently introduced an eight-year tenure policy for directors of federal ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to weed out age cheats in the civil service.

The government commenced the implementation of the revised public service rules (PSR) in July.

The rules provide that a director (GL 17) or its equivalent as may be prescribed by other MDAs shall compulsorily retire upon the attainment of eight years in that position.

In a statement on Wednesday, Sam Olumekun, INEC national commissioner and chairman, information voter education committee, said the electoral body has approved the implementation of the retirement policy.

“As per this directive, four Directors of the Commission will proceed on terminal leave. Two of them serve as Heads of Departments at the National Headquarters, while the other two are deployed as Administrative Secretaries in our State offices,” the statement reads.

“However, it’s important to note that Clinical Officers in the medical cadre are exempt from this policy, as clarified in Circular MH. 7205/T/31 dated 7th September 2023.

“The Commission wishes the affected Directors the best as they retire from service.”
