INEC receives petition for recall of Kano assembly member

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the receipt of a petition for the recall of Abubakar Kuki, representative of Bebeji constituency in the Kano state house of assembly.

Adedeji Soyebi, the commission’s chairman of information and voter education committee, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

The statement said Kuki’s constituents submitted the petition on Friday.

“In accordance with the INEC guidelines for recall, the commission has formally acknowledged the receipt of the petition to the petitioner and has written to inform Mr Kuki of the presentation of the petition,” the statement read.

“A time table and schedule of activities in respect of the petition will soon be released.”

The development comes weeks after a federal high court in Abuja halted the move to recall Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west senatorial district.

INEC had pasted a time table for the verification of signatures collected for the process of ejecting Melaye from the upper legislative chamber.

The lawmaker had gone to the court to challenge the bid to eject him from the upper legislative chamber.

According to the electoral act, one-half of the number of registered voters in a constituency is required for the recall of a lawmaker.

A recall is the power of voters to unseat a serving lawmaker before the person’s tenure is up.

Kuki is from the same constituency with Abdulmumin Jibrin, suspended member of the house of representatives.
