The Kano government has directed the immediate closure of some tertiary institutions in the state.

Mariya Bunkure, the state commissioner for higher education, announced this in a statement issued on Saturday.

The affected schools are Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Advanced and Remedial Studies, Tudun Wada; School of Environmental Studies, Gwarzo; School of Rural Technology and Entrepreneurship Development, Rano; and Audu Bako College of Agriculture Development (ABCOAD), Dambatta.

The development comes a day after the government shut down 10 boarding schools in Kano over the abduction of students from neighbouring states.

“With this instruction, all students of the affected schools are advised to vacate the campuses as soon as possible,’’ Bunkure said.

The decision to shut down the educational institutions in Kano follows the abduction of 317 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Secondary School at Jangebe, Zamfara state, on Friday.

The abduction in Zamfara comes less than two weeks after bandits abducted students and staff members from Government Science College, Kagara in Niger state.

The Niger students were released on Saturday, but the whereabouts of the 317 Jangebe schoolgirls remain unknown.

Bello Matawalle, governor of Zamfara, had also ordered the immediate closure of all boarding schools in the state.
