Inuwa Yahaya donates N50m to victims of flood, gunmen attack in Yobe

Inuwa Yahaya, governor of Gombe, has donated N50 million to victims of flooding and gunmen attack in Mafa LGA of Yobe state.

Mamman Mohammed, the governor’s spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

Yahaya, who was represented by his deputy, Manesiah Jatau, described the incidents as “double tragedy”.

“We share with you the double tragedy of the attack on the community and the floods that claimed some lives, swept away houses and farmlands” he said.

“The donation of N50m is to support the state government in providing assistance to the victims.”

On his part, Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe, commended Yahaya for his support during the state’s challenging period.

“I am highly delighted with this show of sympathy and brotherhood exhibited to us by the government of Gombe state, we will continue to cherish this support, care and visit” Buni said.

Buni added that security challenges are a global issue requiring collective efforts and cooperation to effectively combat and overcome the menace.

BACKGROUND

On September 2, Dungus Abdulkarim, Yobe police spokesperson, said gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents looted and set ablaze shops and houses in Mafa village of Tarmuwa LGA.

Abdulkarim said the gunmen killed an “unspecified number of people and dropped some fliers with Arabic inscriptions”.

A letter penned in Arabic revealed the group’s motive, citing the village’s alleged military ties as justification.

On September 3, Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, reported that the attack occurred during Magrib prayer.

Makama said 34 worshippers were killed, adding that the gunmen also laid multiple explosives on the path to the village.

Days after the attack, the Yobe state government conducted a mass burial of the casualties.

The attack was said to have been orchestrated by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter of Boko Haram.
