Isaac Promise, a former Super Eagles and Flying Eagles’ skipper, has died at the age of 31.

His death was announced in a statement on the official website of Austin Bold, his USL championship side, on Thursday.

“Austin Bold FC is heartbroken by the death of Promise Isaac who passed Wednesday night at the age of 31,” the statement read.

“An accomplished player, Isaac became the club’s 7th signing in history in August 2018 after spending the previous 12 seasons in the Turkish Süper Lig, TFF First League, and the Saudi Professional League.”

Bobby Epstein, Austin Bold chairman, said Isaac collapsed at the apartment gym and no foul play was suspected.

“The greatest loss a team can suffer is not on the scoreboard, it’s the death of a fellow teammate,” wrote Epstein.

“It’s with shock and grief that we acknowledge the sudden death of Promise Isaac.

“On behalf of the BOLD organisation; we wish his wife, children and family strength and peace as they struggle to cope with his death.”

He was the captain of the Dream Team that won the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He also captained the silver medal winning U20 team in 2005.

The talented footballer played for seven clubs in Turkey, taking part in over 350 matches. He also played professionally for 14 seasons, much of which was spent in Turkey. He scored a total of 77 club goals during his career.

Promise death brings to two the number of the departed stars from that brilliant 2005 U-20 world cup set.

Olufemi Adebayo, Defence ace, died in Greece in 2011.
