At least 13 people were killed, while several others sustained injuries when explosion rocked the Imam Sadiq mosque in Kuwait city’s al-Sawabir district on Friday.
Worshippers were observing Ramadan prayers when the incident occurred in the mosque which is one of the largest Shia mosques in the middle eastern nation.
In a statement posted via its affiliated social media accounts, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was targeted at a “temple of the rejectionists” – a term used by the extremist sect when referring to Shia Muslims.
Abu Suleiman al-Muwahed was identified as the bomber.

The attack comes days after similar attacks on Shiite mosques in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, ISIS claimed responsibility for those attack as well.
Earlier, the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida said “eight casualties have been taken to the Emiri hospital, two in critical condition”. It was unclear whether any of the eight were among those reported dead.
