ISIS seizes ancient Syrian city, Palmyra

The Islamic State in Syria and Iraq (ISIS) is now in full control of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

According to CNN, ISIS is in full charge of the city, including its military installations, marking the first time it had taken a city directly from the Syrian military and allied forces.

Palmyra is one of the most important cultural centres and heritage sites for UNESCO and others. Although the militant group has destroyed antiquities and monuments in Iraq, the world heritage site in Palmyra has recorded no attack yet, despite the fears of UN and Syrian officials.

Irina Bokova, the UNESCO director-general, said the takeover puts civilians at risk, and therefore urged the international community to do everything in its power to protect the endangered people and sites.

“The fighting is putting at risk one of the most significant sites in the Middle East, and its civilian population,” she said.

“I reiterate my appeal for an immediate cessation of hostilities at the site. I further call on the international community to do everything in its power to protect the affected civilian population and safeguard the unique cultural heritage of Palmyra.”
