Islamic group suspends shari’ah court launch amid backlash

The Oyo state chapter of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria says it has suspended the inauguration of the shari’ah court initially scheduled for January 11, 2025.

In a statement on Tuesday, Daud Igi Ogun, Khadimul Muslimeen of Oyo land, said the council suspended the inauguration until further notice.

“On behalf of the Oyo Muslim indigenes, this is to inform the general public that the inauguration ceremony of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (Oyo branch) previously scheduled for January 11th, 2025, at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre, Oba Adeyemi High School Road, Mobolaje Area, Agbongangan, Oyo, has been suspended until further notice. Islam portrays peace!” the statement reads.

Earlier, a flier promoting the event had circulated widely, with the group inviting guests nationwide to the inauguration ceremony.

The flier identified Yusuf Akinade Olayinka 1, Bashorun of Oyo land, as the royal father of the day.

It also named Abdullateef Eleyele, Mufairu of Oyo land, as the spiritual father of the day.

Tajudeen Kamorise, Aare Musulumi of Oyo land, was listed as the chief host of the occasion.

However, the now-cancelled event stirred controversy on X, a microblogging platform, where some users alleged it was an attempt to impose Shari’ah law on south-western Nigeria.
