‘It violates civil service ethics’ — Oyo warns schools against illegal fees

The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has warned schools in the state against collecting illegal fees from students.

At a briefing in Ibadan on Wednesday, Nureni Adeniran, chairman of the board, said the act “is against the ethics of civil service”.

Adeniran said the board recently pardoned some workers found culpable of collecting such illegal fees from pupils in the state.

He added that others apprehended for various irregularities were also forgiven according to the extant rules in the state civil service.

“The board has pardoned the head teachers caught collecting illegal fees in some basic schools, in spite of the recommendations of the disciplinary panel,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“OYO SUBEB set up a disciplinary committee to review the fate of some workers with issues. The committee came up with recommendations, however, in the spirit of the season, the board has pardoned them.

“For those that have committed offences, we are all human beings and because the times are very hard, the board has decided to pardon them.

“We have pardoned the erring officers with different categories of offences and asked them not to try such misdeeds, henceforth.”

Raji Oladimeji, the state chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), thanked the SUBEB chairman for the gesture.

He also appreciated the state government for promoting the welfare of workers.
