Dauda Lawal, governor of Zamfara, says the state’s airport under construction will be ready in four months to boost economic activities and attract investors.

Speaking during an interview with ARISE TV on Monday, Lawal said the airport would ease access to Zamfara, noting that investors are discouraged by the long, risky seven-hour road trip from Abuja to the state.

“There’s no meaningful investor that would drive from Abuja, for example, all the way to Zamfara by road, spending seven hours,” the governor said.

“That’s what I do whenever I come to Abuja or going back to Zamfara. You think it’s something that any investor would do? With all the challenges of insecurity?

“Of course, you need to open up the state, and opening up the state means you need to have an airport.

“I am happy to tell you that the airport is near completion. Within the next three to four months, you will be able to fly into Zamfara state, marking the beginning of great things as the state becomes more accessible.

“All these issues of insecurity here and there, people travelling by road, and fear of being attacked will become history.”

Speaking on infrastructural development by his administration, the governor said improvements in roads and flood control have boosted business activities and created new employment opportunities.

“When I took over, you could not travel 200 meters in Gusau on a good road; whenever it rained, everywhere flooded, but now you can see the improvements we’ve made, which have created employment and boosted business activities,” Lawal added.

In June 2024, Zamfara commenced the construction of an international airport to promote trade and tourism.

Lawal said the project is intended to be a smart airport designed to accommodate domestic and international flights.

The governor added that his administration is determined to transform the state into a compelling investment destination that would attract both local and international investors.
