Ghana’s electoral commission has declared John Mahama as the presidential election winner.
Jane Mensa, chairperson of the commission, announced Mahama as the president-elect on Monday.
Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55 percent of the vote cast, to defeat Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), who gathered 4,657,304 votes with 41.6 percent.
Mahama served as Ghana’s president from 2012-2016.

The former president based his campaign on the economic strides Ghana made under his leadership.
Ahead of the final vote count, Bawumia conceded to Mahama.
The vice-president, who was seeking to replace Nana Akufo-Ado, said his decision was in the interest of Ghana.
