‘It’s time for unity and development’ — Shettima asks Nigerians to shun protest

Vice-President Kashim Shettima in Maiduguri

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has appealed to Nigerians to shun the planned nationwide protest.

Speaking in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno, on Saturday, Shettima said protest has never been a solution for nations to solve their challenges.

He noted that protest is always an avenue for the destruction of human lives and properties.

“Earlier today at a wedding ceremony in Maiduguri, Borno State, I implored Nigerians to shun the planned nationwide protests scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024, as it is time for unity and focused development in the country,” he wrote in a message posted on his X page.

“Protest has never been a solution for nations to solve their challenges, but rather an avenue for the destruction of human lives and properties.”

The vice-president’s comments follow the reports of a planned youth-led nationwide protest over the economic hardship in the country.

The planned protest has been slated to commence on August 1.

However, federal and state governments, including President Bola Tinubu, have appealed to the youths to shelve the planned protest.

Religious and traditional institutions have equally called for the cancellation of the planned demonstration.
