Iwobi recovers from ‘traveller’s diarrhoea’, returns to team

Alex Iwobi, the Super Eagles’ forward, has recovered from a bout of ‘traveller’s diarrhoea’ and has joined up with his teammates ahead of the double-header Nations Cup qualifier against Egypt.

Reports had suggested that he suffered from food poisoning and had been hospitalised.

Toyin Ibitoye, the spokesperson of the Super Eagles, told TheCable on Tuesday that Iwobi is now hail and hearty after the scare.

Traveler’s diarrhoea (TD) is defined as a stomach and intestinal infection affecting travellers, leading to frequent stooling within a 24-hour period and commonly accompanied by abdominal cramps, nausea and bloating.

Reports quoted Samson Siasia, the coach, as saying Iwobi contracted food poisoning after eating salad.

Food poisoning is caused by bacteria or other toxins in food, and is usually accompanied with vomiting and diarrhoea.

But Ibitoye said: “Alex is sitting with Mikel in the bus on the ride to Kaduna.

“Alex ate lunch with everyone before we left for Kaduna. He and Mikel sat behind me in the bus.

“He did not train with the team this morning because he had what is called traveller’s diarrhoea, reason the coach asked him to rest.

“I can assure you that Alex is going to train with the rest of the team in Kaduna later this evening.”
