Jemilat Nasiru is TheCable journalist of the year, the newspaper’s management announced on Thursday.
The award, which comes with a cash prize of N300,000, recognises journalists within the ranks of TheCable who have demonstrated industry, resilience, and self-motivation, and have produced impactful stories in the course of the year.
Chinedu Asadu, who now works with the Associated Press (AP), and Taiwo Adebulu, features and investigations editor of TheCable, won the awards in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
Vivian Chime, James Ojo, and Busola Aro were joint winners of the award in 2022. Claire Mom was named winner of the award in 2023.

Nasiru joined TheCable in 2016. Her zeal, industry, and overall output in 2024 gave her the edge, management said.
In September, Nasiru co-authored a two-part report with Mansur Ibrahim, head of multimedia. The story explored how poor waste management practices and lax regulation have led to the continued importation and crude recycling of electronic waste.
The story, ‘LIVING ON BORROWED TIME: How Nigeria’s unchecked e-waste is poisoning residents, environment’, won the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) award in November.

In December, the report won the Wole Soyinka award for investigative reporting in the online category.
Nasiru, who has risen through the ranks at the company, has led multiple productions, including hosting podcasts and X Spaces for TheCable.
ORILOYE IS EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR, AGAIN
Rachael Oriloye, TheCable’s business development officer, was named employee of the year for the second year running.

Simon Kolawole, founder and CEO of TheCable, said the award was introduced to recognise and appreciate the services of non-editorial staff who have contributed to the overall success of the team.
Oriloye, who takes home N200,000, was commended for her energy, work ethic, and resourcefulness.
COMMENDATIONS FOR SIX OUTSTANDING JOURNALISTS
TheCable also honoured six other journalists for their outstanding contributions to the team.

Olubusola Aro, business reporter, was commended for being a team player, while Ayodele Oluwafemi of the judiciary desk was lauded for his industry and productivity.
Victor Ejechi who heads TheCable Index, and Samuel Akpan, senior politics reporter, were hailed for their innovation and endeavour.

Deborah Bodunde, climate reporter, was recognised as the most improved journalist, while Aderonke Oni, a business reporter, was named TheCable’s ‘budding star’, a category introduced in 2024.
