Jibril Diso, Nigeria’s first visually impaired professor, is dead.

Lamara Garba, spokesman for Bayero University, Kano (BUK), announced Diso’s demise on Friday.

Until his death, Diso was a lecturer in the department of special education at BUK. He was born in the Diso quarters of Gwale LGA, Kano.

He started schooling in 1962 and finished his primary education in 1969. He attended Gindiri Blind Secondary School in Plateau state in 1979.

He later furthered his studies at Tudun Maliki School for the Special Needs in Kano before joining the department of special education at BUK in 1994.

In 2019, he became the first professor with a visual impairment in Nigeria.

He earned his PhD in special education from the University of Birmingham in London in 1991.
