Jigawa explosion: Nigeria must explore trains as alternate means for transporting petrol, says Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says Nigeria must explore trains as an alternative means to transport petroleum products for enhanced safety.

On Tuesday, the Jigawa police command confirmed 90 fatalities from a petrol tanker explosion on the Kano-Hadejia expressway.

The command added that the explosion injured 50 people, mostly those who were trying to scoop petrol after the tanker tipped over.

Reacting to the inferno in a post on Wednesday, Abubakar called for training of drivers transporting petroleum products.

“I am saddened by reports of the death of scores of people in a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State,” he wrote.

“The incident in Jigawa is one too many involving tragic petrol tanker explosions in the country.

“It is about time we explored other means, like rail, for transporting petroleum products around the country.

“It is also pertinent to train drivers involved in the transportation of flammable products and review the protocol for the transportation of petroleum products and other inflammable products.

“I wish to share my grief with the people and government of Jigawa State and ask for an expeditious rescue and control operation. No resource should be spared in treating the injured.”

The former vice-president expressed sympathy to bereaved families while seeking comfort for them and eternal peace for the victims.
