Jigawa to set up flood disaster management fund

Umar Namadi, governor of Jigawa, says plans are underway to establish a flood disaster emergency trust fund to manage recurring flood incidents in the state.

Speaking at the inauguration of the flood disaster management committee at the Jigawa government house on Friday, Namadi said the trust fund will serve as a first resort emergency response for rehabilitation and relief to disaster victims in the state.

The governor said the committee will be responsible for ensuring the smooth establishment and operation of the trust fund.

“The objective is for the trust fund to serve as a first resort emergency response for rehabilitation and relief to disaster victims on a sustainable basis,” Namadi said.

“Already a draft bill has been produced by the former committee but needs to be subjected to further review before it is finalised for further appropriate action.

He assured the committee that every necessary logistical support to facilitate the smooth execution of their tasks shall be provided.

He added that once passage and assent of the legislation establishing the trust fund is done, he will ensure its effective implementation in accordance with the law.
