JOHESU to FG: Mobilise to rescue abducted national eye care centre registrar

The Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (JOHESU) has asked the federal and state governments to mobilise security agencies to ensure the release of Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.

Popoola was reportedly abducted on December 27, 2023, alongside her husband and nephew at their residence in Kaduna.

While her husband was released after a ransom was paid, Popoola and her nephew remained in captivity.

In a statement on Saturday by Kabir Minjibir and Martin Egbanubi, national chairman and secretary of JOHESU, the union expressed displeasure over the incident while noting the vulnerability of healthcare workers across the country.

The union described the trend of kidnapping health workers as dangerous, adding that the development undermines healthcare delivery to citizens.

The union expressed support for the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on its seven-day nationwide warning strike, which commenced on August 26, in response to the kidnapping of health workers.

JOHESU also urged President Bola Tinubu to implement advanced security measures to combat the rising incidents of kidnapping, banditry, and organised crimes in the country.
