President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of Samuel Ogungbesan as the acting executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
Reuben Abati, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, announced the appointment in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Kabiru Mashi, who has been in charge of FIRS since 2012, was directed to hand over to Ogungbesan with immediate effect.
“Ogungbesan, a co-ordinating director at FIRS, replaces Alhaji Kabiru Mashi, who had been the acting executive chairman of the agency since 2012,” the statement read.

Mashi’s tenure extended till now as a result of the senate’s rejection of the nomination of Mfon Akpan from Abia state.
Ogungbesan holds a bachelor of science degree in economics and he is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and also an associate member of Nigerian Institute of Management.
He joined the service as an inspector of taxes II and has risen through the ranks.

Until his appointment, he was FIRS’ coordinating director for standards and compliance group.
