Notwithstanding the stiff opposition posed by World Cup favourites Argentina in Wednesday’s final group match, President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed confidence that the Super Eagles of Nigeria will qualify for the tournament’s round of 16.
Speaking while receiving the national executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who visited the presidential villa to congratulate him on the party’s victory in the Ekiti State governorship election, the president reasoned that a loss too Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday would have been devastating.
He admitted that the Super Eagles will be meeting a top soccer playing nation, Argentina, in its last group match, but he was full of confidence that Nigeria would win.
“Last night, the Super Eagles made all Nigerians to smile. I know the game is not over until we play the last match but at least, at this time, I congratulate the country and Nigerians for what the Super Eagles have done,” Jonathan told the NEC members, who were led by party chairman, Adamu Muazu.

“If we had lost that match, it would have been most devastating for us. Even though we know we still have a top soccer country to meet, I am convinced that we shall triumph. I am convinced that we will go into the next round.”
The president said the triumph of the Eagles over Bosnia at a time Ayo Fayose of PDP was also wining the governorship election is proof that a new nation is unfolding.
Eagles play Argentina at 5pm Nigerian time on Wednesday in a match that would decided if the Eagles finish first or second in the group, or if Iran take their current second place.
