President Goodluck Jonathan had a meeting with aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers of the upper chamber on Thursday.
The meeting, which was also attended by Adamu Muazu, the national chairman of the party, was a move to pacify the lawmakers displeased with the decision of the president to support the bid of some governors to contest the 2015 senatorial election.
Nine serving governors, including those of Delta, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Enugu are eyeing the senate.
Jonathan was also alleged to have granted those who were not interested in contesting the election to pick their candidates, therefore reducing the chances of the present senators to retain their seat.
The legislators had expressed dissatisfaction over the development.
The senate adjourned plenary abruptly on Tuesday and scheduled for an emergency meeting of all PDP members.
Victor Ndoma-Egba, the senate leader who moved the motion for the adjournment, told his colleagues that the meeting was urgent because crucial issues would be discussed.
However, Godswill Akpabio, governor of Akwa Ibom state and chairman of the PDP governors forum, said the dissent of the senators was a party affair that would be silenced by the PDP internal resolution mechanism.
Akpabio, who submitted his nomination and expression-of-interest forms to contest the Akwa Ibom north west senatorial election, said the political space is wide and open for healthy competition among all players.
