Jonathan’s proxy campaign group hits southwest

The Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria, a group campaigning for the reelection of President Goodluck Jonathan, took its campaign to the Ibadan, southwest Nigeria, on Saturday.

The group which styles itself as comprising “individuals of impeccable character fostering the continuation of transformation by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan”, held its first rally in Anambra state last week.

The group’s rally at the Liberty stadium in Ibadan saw a massive turnout of people from states across the southwest.

Top Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figures such as former speaker of the federal house of representatives, Dimeji Bankole; minister of agriculture, Adesina Akinwumi; minister of state for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Oloye Akinjide Olajumoke; Bode George; Ebenezer Babatope; former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel; Ifeanyi Uba and politicians from the Labour Party (LP).

Speaking at the occasion, PDP board of trustees member, Bode George, described the president as a patient and humble leader, and called on Nigerians to give him their mandate in 2015.

“One of his greatest achievements is convoking the national conference for all Nigerians. This is an unprecedented legacy he has left”, George said. “I am therefore asking us to render support to a rare Nigerian.”

Another PDP chieftain, Ebenezer Babatope, simply urged the president to run again, saying that Yoruba people were in support of his reelection.

“The Yoruba people are going to vote for Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. He is a good man, and he has brought beauty and poise to governance” he said.

Secretary to the government of the federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, who received a document containing 1.8 million signatures from citizens endorsing the president for a second term, declared that the support of the southwest had been overwhelming.

Abass Akande Obesere,currently facing charges of alleged rape of a businesswoman who came to him for help, was one of the singers who entertained the crowd.
