The Ogun state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has commenced a five-day warning strike over the “non payment of 40 percent peculiar allowance by the state government”.

Olarenwaju Ajiboye, Ogun JUSUN chair, who spoke to journalists in Abeokuta, said its decision to embark on the warning strike follows series of meetings with the head of service which ended in a deadlock.

He added that despite several letters to the state government, the situation has not improved.

“What is happening here today is that we the judiciary staff union are starting a five-day warning strike to protest the non payment of 40 percent peculiar allowance to judiciary workers by the state government,” he said.

“After the warning strike, if the state government fails to do the needful, the union will proceed on indefinite strike by March 18.

“In August 2023, Ogun state government commenced the payment of peculiar allowance to core civil servants in Oke-mosan. Immediately we heard of it, we informed our national body.

“The union wrote three letters; one to the head of service, two to the governor directly.

“The head of service has met with the union and stakeholders on the way forward, but reason given for the non payment was not tenable and not acceptable by the union. That is why we are proceeding on a five-day warning strike.

“After the expiration of the warning strike, we will proceed on an indefinite strike.”

Ajiboye urged the state government to look into the requests of workers and take necessary action.

NAN reports that courts in Ogun were under lock and key, with nobody allowed entry to the premises.

Ajiboye said the union held a congress in Isabo on February 3, where a 21-day ultimatum was issued to the government.
