Dino Melaye, lawmaker representing Kogi west, says he has just survived an assassination attempt.
Melaye, who is struggling to retain his seat at the red chamber, disclosed this on Twitter.
He said a combined team of Department of State Services and the Nigeria police force saved him from the attack which he blamed on the government.
Melaye said he did not know if anyone died but that two people who sustained injuries were being treated at the hospital.

“There was serious exchange of gun shots between the DSS, policemen and government assassins. DSS I thank you for saving my life after God,” he wrote.

Willy Aya, spokesman of the Kogi state police command, could not be reached for comments on the attack as calls to his telephone line indicated that it was switched off.
Earlier on Monday, his supporters and opponents clashed in Lokoja, capital of the state, where he addressed a rally.

On Saturday, voters in the seven local government areas that make up his senatorial district crowded polling units in the area to endorse the request for the recall of Melaye.

But the senator, who accused his opponent of masterminding the act, boasted that the move to recall him will fail.
“Quote me, Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello, has released N200 million for each of the seven local government areas in my senatorial district to facilitate my recall from the Senate,” Melaye alleged.
