Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has declined the invitation of the police.

On Monday, the police invited Ajaero over “a case of criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime”.

In a letter signed by Samuel Ogala, principal partner at the Falana & Falana’s Chambers, Ajaero’s counsel said the NLC president was unable to honour the invitation on Tuesday because of other engagements.

The counsel said Ajaero would be available for questioning on Wednesday, August 29, 2024.

The NLC president also demanded details of the allegations levelled against him.

“We have the instructions of Comrade Joe Ajaero to inform you that he is unable to honour your invitation on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 in view of the fact that your invitation letter was received by him yesterday,” the letter reads.

“He has an engagement that had been fixed before the receipt of the invitation letter.

“Therefore, Comrade Ajaero is prepared for your interview on Wednesday, August 29, 2024. Furthermore, in accordance with the provisions of section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as altered, Comrade Ajaero requests for the details and nature of the allegations of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion and Cybercrime levelled against him.”

TheCable understands that the invitation is connected to the recent raid of the NLC secretariat in Abuja by the police on August 7.

The NLC said the operatives who carried out the raid “claimed that they were looking for seditious materials used for the #EndBadGovernance protests”.

Subsequently, Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), said one of the masterminds of the Sudan conflict was “traced to the NLC headquarters”.
