Patients evacuated after fire outbreak at ICU of UCH Ibadan

A fire outbreak has been reported at a section of the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo state.

The fire reportedly engulfed a part of the UCH building on Saturday.

Emergency responders had put out the fire as of the time of filing this report.

Funmi Adetuyibi, UCH public relations officer, confirmed the incident to TheCable.

“The fire happened in a room in one of our intensive care units but it did not affect any patients at the ICU. The patients have been moved elsewhere. The fire started in the nurses lounge,” he said.

“The fire has been put out. Everywhere is cool and calm and the hospital is running its normal service now.

“I also want to use this medium to inform you that presently, the hospital has a fire station which is under construction.”

FIRE INCIDENTS IN IBADAN

This is not the first time a facility in the teaching hospital would record a fire outbreak in 2023.

There have also been a number of fire incidents in the Oyo capital in recent months.

In April, one of the residential blocks at UCH was razed by fire.

Documents and some valuables were lost in the inferno which was reportedly caused by an electrical surge.

In the same month, goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in a fire incident at the plank section of the Bodija market in Ibadan.

In May, five rows of shops at Agbeni market in Ibadan were gutted by fire.

At the beginning of 2023, some shops in Araromi spare parts market in Agodi Gate, also in the state capital, were gutted by fire.

The Oyo fire service had said the inferno was caused by indiscriminate refuse burning.
