Five of the passengers abducted during an attack on a train in Kaduna, on Tuesday, regained their freedom.

The train was attacked on March 28, 2022, with several passengers killed while others sustained injuries.

Tukur Mamu, publisher of Desert Herald, who had been involved in negotiations for the release of the abductees, confirmed the development.

The development comes days after a video of the abductees being flogged surfaced on social media.

Hours after the video surfaced, relatives of the victims staged a protest at the premises of the ministry of transportation in Abuja on July 25.

Speaking while addressing the relatives, Mu’azu Sambo, minister of transportation, said the federal government is working on efforts to ensure the rescue of the abductees.

“You have been very patient. The government itself has not been sleeping from enquiries I have made,” Sambo had said.

Meanwhile, earlier in July, seven of the abducted passengers were freed — Sadiq, son of Ango Abdullahi, chairman of Northern Elders Forum (NEF), was among the seven victims.

Eleven of the abductees were also released in June.
