Manchester United have announced that forward Mason Greenwood will leave the club by mutual agreement.

Greenwood had been arrested by the police in the UK on January 30, 2022, following footage posted online that showed possible attempted rape against his ex-girlfriend.

The incident led to the 21-year-old’s indefinite suspension by Man United.

He was thereafter charged to court over allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault.

The Crown Prosecution Service, however, announced that the charges were discontinued after key witnesses withdrew their involvement.

Greenwood had been suspended from Manchester United training and matches until the club completed an internal investigation.

But in a statement on Monday, the Red Devils said Greenwood will be leaving the club following an internal investigation into the allegations against him.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United,” the statement reads in part.

“It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

Before the English Premier League (EPL) clash with Wolves, a group of female United supporters protested outside Old Trafford against his potential return.

Greenwood, who came through Manchester United’s academy, last played for the club on January 22, 2022.

The Bradford-born player, who broke into the first team in 2019, scored 22 goals in 83 English Premier League appearances for Man United.
