Helicopters hover over Kano

Helicopters are currently hovering over Kano in anticipation of the arrival of President Goodluck Jonathan, who is scheduled to pay a condolence visit to the family of late former emir of the state, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

Jonathan is expected to be received at the Galadima House, family house of the Bayeros, which is adjacent the palace of the emir of Kano.

There was no official confirmation of his visit – or if he will eventually visit at all.

The president was expected to visit Chibok, Borno State, recently but despite an advance team being sent to the state, his spokesman said he had no plans to go there.

As the palace of the emir is still under lock and key, new emir, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has been operating from the Kano State Government House, Naseer House precisely.

Security around the area has been bolstered with a deployment of policemen and soldiers.

The use of private jets  has been prohibited in Kano since Monday, less than a a day after the emergence of Sanusi Lamido as emir.

Although the ban was roundly criticised as a move to prevent Sanusi’s well-wishers from travelling to the north-western state to felicitate with him, director of defence information, Major-General Chris Olukolade, said the ban was prompted by “security” considerations.
