Ibok-Ete Ibas arrives Rivers government house

Ibok-Ete Ibas, the newly appointed sole administrator of Rivers state, has arrived at the Government House in Port Harcourt to formally assume office.

Ibas, a retired naval chief, was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday following the declaration of emergency rule in the state.

His appointment effectively dissolved the state government structure, placing Rivers under federal control.

Upon his arrival on Thursday, Ibas went into a closed-door meeting with senior security officers, a federal government delegation, and state officials.

While details of the discussions remain undisclosed, the meeting is expected to address key governance and security issues following heightened political tensions in the state.

The imposition of emergency rule follows months of political turmoil, primarily stemming from the power struggle between Siminalayi Fubara, the governor, and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).

Although Tinubu brokered a peace deal in December 2023, hostilities persisted, culminating in the assembly’s move to impeach the governor.

With Ibas now in charge, his immediate priorities are expected to focus on restoring stability and coordinating with federal government to manage security concerns across the state.
